Mildred D. (Lindley) Appler was born on Tuesday; October 27, 1908 near Unionville; Putnam County, Missouri. Mildred was the daughter of John R. and Dorthy F. (Piper) Lindley. She graduated from Moulton Community Schools and later Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe; Livingston County, Missouri. On Saturday; October 22, 1932, Mildred was united in marriage to Glenn Appler. They were interested in soil conservation and were among the first in the County to become actively involved. After Glenn's death in a farm accident in 1947, she continued to operate the farm with the help of her 2 young sons. She was involved in many community activities, long time 4-H leader as well as Chairman of County 4-H & active in Farm Bureau County Women's Committee. She was a Sunday School Superintendent of Moulton Presbyterian Church and a Rebekah Lodge in Moulton; Appanoose County, Iowa. She was a member of Kensington, the HSC Club and a board member of the Cross Lines Community Center. After her son, Pierce returned from the Army services in Korea and took over the operation of the farm, she returned to College, earning her degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Moulton-Udell and Moravia; Appanoose County, Iowa Community School districts. In 1960, she took a summer job with the Polk County Juvenile Home in Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa. The work was interesting and challenging and they later offered her a job in the Administrative Department. She worked there until her retirement in 1974 after which she returned to her home south of Moulton, Iowa. Mildred joined the Methodist Church after the Presbyterian Church closed. After retirement, she was soon active again in the local church activities and remained active as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and quilting. She made by hand quilts for all members of her family, their children and grandchildren. In the spring of 2005, she moved to the Continental at Saint Joseph's in Centerville. Mildred D. (Lindley) Appler, age 98, of Moulton, Iowa passed away on Saturday; June 30, 2007 at Continental at Saint Joseph in Centerville, Iowa. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her sons: John Pierce Appler of Moulton, Iowa and Bruce Appler and his wife: Marilyn of San Jose; Santa Clara County, California. Her daughter: Linda Scheffer of Norco; Riverside County, California. Her brothers: Harold and Garold Lindley of Centerville, Iowa. Murl Lindley of Ottumwa; Wapello County, Iowa. Her sister: Hazel Franklin of Lake Havasu City; Mohave County, Arizona. Eight grandchildren and fourteen great grand children. Mildred was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband: Glenn Appler. Her grandson: Mark Appler. Her brothers: Max Lindley, Fred Lindley and Holton Lindley and her sisters: Cary Carter and Fay Daniels. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be held on Monday; July 2, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday; July 3, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Moulton, Iowa with Rev. Jim Schweizer officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery west of Moulton, Iowa. Memorials can be made to either the Mercy Hospice, First Responder or Garrett Memorial Library of Moulton.
