The death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Foote Thursday, March 24, 1932, took from Adams County one of the oldest pioneers of the county and one has been a force in the community in quiet unobtrusive way which had endeared her to many. She passed away quietly at 8 o'clock a.m. at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 27 days. Funeral services were held from the Adams County First Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28th with Rev. E. E. Garrett in charge. Interment was made in Forest Hill Cemetery. The pall bearers were Albert Homan, Charles F. Homan, Edmund B. Homan, Frank Berth, Steve Preston, and Floyd Neill.
Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Ann M. Dewees and Joshua S. Lincoln, was born November 27, 1845 near McConnelsville, Ohio. At an early age she came with her parents, as pioneers, by way of steamer to southeastern, Iowa, locating first in Washington County, where she grew to womanhood. In 1864 the family moved to Quincy, Iowa and on March 1, 1896 she married Charles A. Foote and they located immediately on the farm which has been their home for more than 55 years, excepting a portion of three years spent in Osceola County, Iowa, where they held a soldier's clinic.
To this union ten children were born, four boys and six girls, all of whom died in early childhood excepting Mrs. Clarissa Foote Homan who passed away from this life in 1915, and Mary Myrtle Foote who with the bereaved husband survive. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Chas. F. Homan, Mrs. Edith Dustin, and Edmund B. Homan, who remember her as a wise counselor and guide since the passing of their mother, until they established homes of their own, These with three great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends will miss her sadly.
She is the last member of the pioneer Lincoln family of ten children and will long be remembered for her life of cheerful devotion and loving sacrifice.
