Lorraine Fleming Irons of Willow Valley in Lancaster, PA entered into eternal rest on September 25, 2012.
Lorraine was born in Philadelphia to Lorin and Ida Mae Lightcap. Her extraordinary talent as a singer was recognized at an early age. While still in high school she became a protégé of John Finley Williamson, and later studied with Samuel Margolis in New York and Robert Grooters in Swarthmore. She pursued an active career as a soloist in a number of churches in the greater Philadelphia area, and as a teacher of voice, both privately and on the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Bible. For many years she was the featured soloist on evangelist Jack Wyrtzen's "Word of Life" national radio broadcasts. Coming to Delaware in 1969, she served as choir director for Immanuel Baptist and Faith Presbyterian Churches in Wilmington, and as soprano soloist at Grace Methodist Church.
Lorraine was deeply shaped by her lifelong commitment faithfully to follow Christ and share the love of God with people of every age and station. She organized and taught many Bible study groups, and was a wise mentor and trusted spiritual advisor to several generations of young people.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Dale Fleming; by Yale Irons, to whom she was married in 1997, and by her older brother, John Lightcap. She is survived by her daughter Jeannette Burnam (Jack), her grandchildren Alexandra Morton (Ed), Davidson Burnam (Dawn), and Jesson Geipel (Jay); and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Ella Morton.
A Eucharist of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m., in Immanuel Church on the Green, 50 Market Street, New Castle, Delaware, 19720. Interment will take place Monday, October 1 at 10 a.m., at Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Lorraine's memory be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125; or to the Music Fund of Immanuel Church on the Green.
