John Henry Baldauf, a Crawford automobile dealer in Wichita, hired Marvin to drive his Crawford racing car as a means of promoting his dealership. Marvin competed in a race in Wichita on June 11, 1910 finishing second in three events that afternoon. His first victories came on July 1, 1910 at the Cowley County Fairgrounds at Winfield, Kansas, those victories coming in three-mile and five-mile contests.
By 1921, Marvin had moved to Santa Barbara, California. He married Margaret Curran and they had a daughter, Jean Light. Margaret passed away in 1935 and Marvin married Hazel Cecil (Brown) Stoner who was the mother of Jack Brown Stoner (1923-1991).
Marvin had a Goodyear Tire store in Santa Barbara that he operated for several years.
