of Kingston

May 28, 1926

to June 22, 2011

Veteran

Ernie was born in Seattle, WA to Knute and Martha Lien. The first three years of his life were spent in Petersburg, Alaska before returning to the Puget Sound area where Ernie and his brother Archie grew up.

He at one time attended a one-room school in Bangor, WA and graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1944. After high school, Ernie spent six months sailing the Bering Sea, worked as a logger on the Olympic Peninsula and worked on local commercial fishing boats. Ernie served two years in the U.S. Army and served overseas in the Philippines and Japan. Ernie began his career as an electrician with Great Northern Railroad for two years and then worked for P.U.D. #1 of Snohomish County as a lineman and foreman until he retired in 1988.

Ernie's true calling, however, was building and working with his hands. Together with his brother Archie, they built three houses in Poulsbo, Ernie built three homes in Kingston and one in Edmonds.

In the last few years Ernie also built many pieces of furniture for family members, birdhouses, model trucks, cars and trains. He was the "go-to" guy for friends and family needing advice on building, repairing or remodeling their homes.

Ernie loved the Pacific Northwest and enjoyed hiking in the Olympic Mountains. Together with friends and family, he had climbed most of the trails and peaks.

Ernie is survived by his wife Louise of 59 years, his son Gary (Peggy), daughter Teresa (Holger) Gieschen, grandchildren Kelli (Quent) Altmeyer, Casey (Lara) Lien, Benjamin and Tyler Gieschen, great-grandchildren Braden and Connor Altmeyer and Bennett Lien, his brohter Archie Lien (Norma) of Poulsbo and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson Kristian Gieschen and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to: Hospice of Kitsap County, www.hospicekc.org , 3100 Bucklin Hill Rd. #201 P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383 or a favorite charity of your choice. A celebration of Ernie's life will be held at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club on July 7th 2011 at 1 p.m.
