Lucille L. Lickey Staples, 97, formerly of Columbia City, died Sunday morning, January 26, 2014 at Munroe Regional Hospital in Ocala, Florida.

She was born January 17, 1917 in Washington Township, Whitley County a daughter of Harmon and Opal (Miller) Lickey. Lucille graduated from Washington Center High School in 1937.

On March 27, 1938 she was united in marriage to William Donald Staples at the Eberhard Lutheran Church. They always made their home in Columbia City including their summer home at Big Cedar Lake. In 1984 they began spending their winters in Florida. Mr. Staples died April 1, 1988.

Lucille was an office assistant for the late Benjamin Pence M.D. for three years. In 1945 she began her employment at The Post & Mail Publishing Company, serving as secretary and treasurer of the corporation as well as business manager until the newspaper was sold in 1984.

Her memberships included Grace Lutheran Church, Delta Theta Tau and she was a former member of Business & Professional Women. In 1975 she was elected the first woman President of Indiana Republican Editorial Association and received the distinguished honor, Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Otis Bowen.

Surviving relatives include a niece, Beverly Lickey of Fort Wayne; and god-son, Steve Schwenn of Columbia City and his sister, Susan Schwenn of Fort Lauderdale FL. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Lickey.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with one hour of visitation prior to the service. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
