Frances Lewis Ames, age 73, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Hermitage at Cedarfield.
Mrs. Ames, a native of Walnut Point, Va., was the widow of J. Edward Ames III. She lived throughout Virginia, most recently in Smithfield, where she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Shakespeare Class of Smithfield and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a lifelong volunteer in all of the communities in which she resided.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary A. Gallagher of Madison, Wis.; her son, James E. Ames IV of Richmond; and five grandchildren, Daphne and Julia Gallagher and Mollie, Gretchen and Daniel Ames.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug.4, in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield, by the Rev. Joseph Savinsky.

Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
