Mattie Jolly Lewis Brown, 86, entered into everlasting peace on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the Decatur Health & Rehab Center surrounded by her family.
Mattie, a native of Limestone County and longtime Trinity resident was referred to by many as "Honey" but by family as "Muh." Mattie was born on January 28, 1926, in Madison to the late Jerry Jolly and Esther Robinson Jolly. She was a widow to the late Madison Brown.
She worked as a certified nurse technician for over 35 years under Baugh & Wiley Smith Hospital and Parkway Medical Center until she retired. After which time she joined Community Action and worked as a Foster Grandparent at West Decatur Elementary School. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 15 in Decatur.
Mattie was a member of the St. James C.P.C.A. Church where she faithfully and diligently served on the Mother's Board and the Missionary Ministry. Mattie was a devoted member and maintained a deep love for her church family and her pastor. After her health began to fail and she was unable to attend worship services, she cherished the visits from her beloved church family and pastor. Mattie endured and stood firm on the Word of God. She enjoyed studying the Word and had a deep love for Bible study and Sunday school.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters, Queen (Billy Joe) Pitts of Somerville, Mattie Lewis of Huntsville, Mary (Eddie) Marshall, Gloria (Harold) Pearson and Benita (Dwight) Owens, all of Decatur; two sons, John (Julia) Lewis of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jessie (Linda) Lewis of Rock Hill, S.C.; one stepson, Charles (Zella) Brown of Decatur; 26 grandchildren, 51 great-grand- children, nine great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas (Diane) Jolly of Decatur and one sister, Ella Mae Pickett of Huntsville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mattie was preceded in death by one daughter, Mae Emma Lewis (1963); two sons, Roosevelt Lewis (2001) and Willie T. Lewis (2004).
The family will receive guests at Jackson Memory Funeral Home located at 15737 Main Street, Town Creek, AL on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, from 7 until 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. James C.P.C.A. Church, located at 920 Moulton Street, Decatur. Interment will take place in Calvary Memorial Gardens, 360 Old Highway 24, Decatur.
