His tombstone was inscribed with the wrong unit. Alexander Lewis joined Company D, 59th US Colored Infantry on September 26, 1864 in Springfield, Illinois. He mustered out September 25, 1865 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Aged 57y 9m 23d

Alexander Lewis, a negro laborer, died suddenly of heart failure at 3 o'clock yesterday morning at the family residence, East Mason street. Lewis had not been ill and was at work Thursday. A physician was summoned but death preceded the medical man's arrival. The coroner then was summoned. He held an inquest yesterday afternoon at which a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the family residence and at St. Paul's A.M.E. church. Lewis was 57 years, 9 months and 23 days old. He is survived by his wife, Stella Lewis; and three daughters, Hattie Lewis of this city, Stella Lewis of St. Louis and Gladys Lewis of Springfield.
