Mr Lewis died Wednesday morning, August 15, 2001 at his home in Denmark, Tennessee.
Brooksie Eugene Lewis was born in Mercer, Tennessee on October 15, 1936. His father, Eugene Brooks Lewis, a country barber in the town of Mercer and sharecropper and Mother, Mattie Lucille Lewis, a house wife and school cook, raised him and his sisters, Dorothy and Louise in this little country town called Mercer.
Brooksie graduated from Mercer High School in 1954 but during his life, in Mercer, he continued his studies in the areas of hunting, fishing, whittling and talking. It was also there he began studies in philosophy at Ralph Lewis’ Service Station and Roy Hemby’s Grocery Store. He later studied the art of “Yarn Spinning and Tale Telling” under the guidance of Mr Aubrey Tate, another prominent citizen of Mercer.
Brooksie was a lifelong member of the Mercer United Methodist Church until its closing in the early 1980s. It was there he learned about and met his loving Savior Jesus Christ and was assured a place with him in eternity. He served as Sunday School Superintendent and Lay Leader of the Church. It was also there, on the front porch of the Church, he discussed gardening with Mr Hub Bailey every Sunday. Following the closing of his membership at Mercer United Methodist Church, he transferred to the loving arms of the Big Springs United Methodist Church.
Brooksie was employed with the local telephone company in Jackson, Tennessee.
In the late 1950s while making a round through the drive of the famous “Chat-N-Chew” his eyes landed on Linda Faye Williams of Five Points, Tennessee. It was “love at first sight” and after a formal courtship, they were married. Their first home was in Mercer and they later built a home on Britton Lane in Denmark. It was there they raised their son, Brent Williams Lewis.
