LEIGHTTY - Virginia Lewis died Sunday, April 10, 2011. Her husband, Maj. Ralph Leightty Sr. (U.S. Army Ret.), died before her, in 2002. She is survived by her sons, David (Sharon) and Ralph Jr. (Karen); five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and by her caretaker, Audrey Schulte. Virginia worked for many years in the University of Louisville Health Sciences (Medical School) Library, most of that time as the acquisitions librarian. She retired in 1992 after a quarter-century of service. Virginia was widely known and respected in the Louisville medical community and the UL library system. Virginia earned both her bachelor degree and her MA in history somewhat late in life, after her children were grown. She traveled the world, first as an Army wife, later as a lover of culture and history. She read widely and avidly, with an active curiosity informed by intelligence. An elegant beauty, she possessed a fine sense of style. But her children and grandchildren will remember her as a loving mother and grandparent. A memorial service will be held at First Unitarian Church, 809 S. Fourth St., on Sunday May 1, 2011 at 4 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made by donations to Hosparus (Hospice of Louisville).
