According to Census records his full name was Joseph Flavius John Lewis.
Source: "Church Street Methodists, Children of Francis Asbury", Martin, p. 172. He was a teacher, superintendent, and served as President of the East Tennessee Sunday School Convention. He was a delegate to the International Sunday School Convention. In 1857 he became the Knoxville postmaster. He was a Confederate, and in the battle of Shiloh, assisted in carrying fatally wounded Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston from the battlefield. Other battles he fought in were; Murfreeboro, Vicksburg, Corinth, Mobile, At the close of the war he was appointed as a judge in Arkansas. He returned to Knoxville in 1869 and was clerk of the Knox County Court for 12 years. He was asuccessful lawyer. He was a revered leader of Church Street Methodist Church.
