Birth: Jun. 29, 1827
St. Lawrence County
New York, USA
Death: Nov. 4, 1903
Hamilton
Steuben County
Indiana, USA

Louisa Letcher Goodale was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, June 29, 1827, and died at the home of her son William, near Hamilton, Indiana, Nov. 4, 1903, aged 76 years, 4 months and 6 days.

When five years of age she moved with her parents to Ohio, where she lived until ten years of age, when with her parents she moved to LaGrange county, Ind., and about 1840 to Steuben, which remained her home until she departed to enter into the rest of the new home, "Not made with hands." Sept. 25, 1845, she was united in marriage with Gera L. Goodale, and together they shared the burdens and joys of life until his death, April 30, 1887. To the union were born seven children, three or whom, Mrs. E. D. Creager, Butler, Ind.; G. F. Goodale, Wing, Illinois, and Wm. H. Goodale, Hamilton, Ind., survive her and were present at the funeral.

Mrs. Goodale, while always cheerful and full of hope, lived a life into which were crowed very many hours of sorrow.

Early in life she was converted to Christ and continued a faithful member of His church until the end. Funeral services were held in the Christian church in Angola on Friday afternoon, Nov. 6, conducted by Elder C. S. Medbury. Burial in Circle Hill.

Deceased was a first cousin to President James A. Garfield. Early in her married life, her brother, Amos Letcher and her husband, Gera L. Goodale, were running a boat on the Ohio canal, and Mrs. Goodale officiated as cook. On one trip, they met James A. Garfield, (or Jim as he was called, then about sixteen years of age) in Cleveland and hired him for the summer. He stayed with them three or four months. This constituted the canal experience of Garfield about which we heard so much twenty years ago.
