Elsie Carter Leonard Dawson, 95, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2009, in Woodstown.
Born in Philadelphia on December 1, 1913, she grew up in Penns Grove, lived in Pennsville, and then moved to Woodstown where she had lived for the past 50 years. Elsie contracted influenza in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic and she survived because of the medical care that was provided by her father, a nurse. A graduate of Penns Grove High School and Goldey College, she was a life member of the business honor sorority, Alpha Iota. After college, Elsie worked as a secretary at DuPont Chambers Works where she met her future husband, Robert Dawson. They married and she continued employment at Chambers Works until her first child was born. After her husband died in 1963, she returned to the workforce and joined the First National Bank of Woodstown where she was employed for 20 years. She was a member of the Woodstown Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. Elsie was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Brownie Troop leader and active in the Pennsville and Woodstown Parent Teacher Associations when her children were young. She was also a member of the Pilesgrove-Woodstown and Penns Grove Historical Societies, the Order of the Eastern Star Pitman Chapter #57, the Salem County Genealogical Society, the Woodstown Women's Club and the Woodstown Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. She was a past member of the Great Books Society and the Salem County Archaeology Club. She enjoyed genealogy, collecting recipes and stamps, sewing, dancing, and playing the piano and violin. Elsie was very proud of her children and always made her family the first priority. She worked hard to support them and instill in them the importance of education and appreciation of music. After her children were grown, she enjoyed traveling. In 1982, she went on a cross-country trip with two other widows in a motor home, and in 1983, she traveled to France with her son and his wife. Elsie also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: son, Arthur (Pamela) of Glen Ridge, New Jersey and daughters, Roberta (John Chabalko) of Wilmington, Delaware; Mary (Nathan Silverman) of Evanston, Illinois; and Dorothy (Jon Hall) and Barbara (Ronald Dorrell), both of Alloway; grandchildren: John, Christopher and Katherine Chabalko, Matthew and David Silverman, Rachel Dorrell, and Alexander Dawson; brother Charles Arthur Leonard (Doris) of Richmond, Virginia and a niece, Barbara Alayne Arenberg (Bill), of Flagler Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sarah Carter Leonard, and sisters Violet and Josephine.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 21 at 11 am at the Woodstown Presbyterian Church where friends may call beginning at 10 am. Burial will be at Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown.
