BETTENDORF - Etta Mae Leonard, of Bettendorf and more recently of the Bettendorf Health Care Center, went to be with her Lord Friday, August, 29, 2003, after a brief illness. She was born December 8, 1920, at Mott, N.D., a daughter and second child of her parents, Louis Aaron and Adah Rilla (Treon) Vasey. She graduated from Jamestown College in North Dakota in 1942 and on June 16, 1943, she was united in marriage to the Rev. James R. Leonard in the Methodist Church, Mott, N.D. She was a highly qualified high school English teacher, for two years, before and after her marriage and was a much-loved helper to her husband in the pastorates of churches in North Dakota, Lincoln, Neb., New York City, Minneapolis, Minn., and Muscatine, Iowa, until his retirement in April 1986. During part of the time in Lincoln, she was employed by the Back to the Bible Broadcast, headquartered in Lincoln. During the period from 1952-57, her husband had been a part of the music ministry there as well as being the first pastor of First Evangelical Free Church, Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Leonard served for six years in the Women's Missionary Society of the Evangelical Free Church of America as national chairman of the White Cross part of that work. Also, over many years, she had a unique ministry to many people in many places sending cards and letters of Christian encouragement. She was the mother of two daughters, Kay L. Bilger of Hastings, Minn., and Sharon R. Leonard of Anoka, Minn. She is survived in addition to her husband and daughters, by three grandchildren, Humphrey of Los Angeles, Casey of Phoenix, and Carson of Hastings, Minn.; and one great-grandchild. One grandchild, Joshua Klick, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Marge Holloway, Fresno, Calif.; three brothers, Frank Vasey of Bismarck, N.D., Robert Vasey of Mott, N.D., and Dr. Ed Vasey of Fargo, N.D.; and a sister, Betty preceded her in death. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Memorial services will be held at First Evangelical Free Church, 3321 7th St., Moline, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with committal at Pine Hill Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church or The Jesus Film of Campus Crusade for Christ.
