William S. Leonard enlisted as a private at Marysville, California, September 6, 1861, and was mustered into Company D, 1st California Cavalry, September 9. Serving with the California Column, Pvt. Leonard was mortally wounded while in action against Confederate forces at the Battle of Picacho Pass, Arizona. He is one of three Union men to die as a result of the engagement. Originally interred at the site of the battle, his remains were later returned to the state for which he served.
