Ida Sinberg Leon , 96, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in her residence on Pembroke Avenue.

Mrs. Leon was born on Oct. 9, 1902, in Baltimore, Md., and was the daughter of Samuel Sinberg and Lena Sinberg Goodman. At a very young age, her family moved to Norfolk and she resided in the city until the time of her death. She was a graduate of Maury High School, Class of 1921. After graduation, she was employed in the advertising department of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot and later at the Max Schwan Company. In the 1930s, Mrs. Leon opened her own ladies specialty shop, Leon's Womenswear, which was located on the corner of Freemason and Boush streets. After closing the store in the late 1940s, Mrs. Leon worked with the Sarah Cohen's shop on College Place until her retirement. She served as an election official for the city of Norfolk and a volunteer with the American Red Cross for approximately 40 years and was also a regular volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. She was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth El, its sisterhood and Hadassah.

Mrs. Leon was married to the late Max Leon, from whom she was widowed in 1957. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Esther Sinberg Legum of Norfolk, and a brother, Maxwell Sinberg of Hazelton, Pa.

Survivors include her daughter, Charlotte Leon of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her son, Arnold H. Leon and his wife, Telsa Leon, of Norfolk; her sister, Augusta Goodman Gold of Norfolk; seven grandchildren, David Leon and Stephen Leon, both of Norfolk, Miles Leon of Virginia Beach, Kay Ziplow of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Harriet Gitenstein of Scottsdale, Ariz., Dennis Davidoff of Israel, Marc Davidoff of Seattle, Wash.; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A chapel service will be conducted at noon today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jewish Family Services of Tidewater, P.O. Box 9503, Norfolk, Va. 23505, or a charity of one's choice. The family will sit shiva at the home of Telsa and Arnold Leon in Norfolk.
