Maria Jesus Leon Alvarez, 100, a Naco, Ariz., resident, died in The Life Care Center in Sierra Vista, Ariz., on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005. Maria was born in Aconchi, Sonora, Mexico, on Nov. 4, 1904, to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Jose Leon.
She moved to the United States at the age of 20 and became a resident on Naco, Ariz. While living in Mexico, she became a teacher and taught in the grade school. Maria was known for her infectious personality, sense of humor and competitive nature. She loved to sew and cook and enjoyed working in her yard with her plants and flowers. Maria was a devoted member of St. Michael Church.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jose C. Alvarez, in October 1978; her two daughters, Blanca Tovar in 1976 and Rosalie Borboa in October 2004; her son, Joe Alvarez, in April 2004; her brothers, Lorenzo and Santiago Leon; and her sister, Consuelo Mayoral. Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Jackie Alvarez of San Diego, Calif., and Frank and Lupe Alvarez of Bisbee, Ariz.; a sister, Constanza Rosales of Mexico; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church. Mass will be said on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at 10 a.m., also at St. Michael Church. Burial will follow at Memory Garden Cemetery. All arrangements are being handled by Dugan Funeral Chapel.
