Hannchen met her husband, Melville when he was stationed in Germany while serving in the Army. They where married on July 3, 1954, in Germany and shortly after, settled in Scarborough where as a couple, they raised five children. Her interests included flower gardening, knitting, painting and all things crafty. She also loved her Chihuahua, "ToTo." Over the years, along with her husband; they made numerous trips back to Germany to visit family still living there. Hannchen was a small woman with a big heart. She spent the last seven months of her life at the home of her granddaughter Kristy and her husband Wayne along with their children, Koby, Emily and Brady, while they lovingly cared for her during her illness. Oma was the "rock" of the family.
Her husband, Melville H. Johnson Jr., predeceased her on July 19, 2002. Five brothers and four sisters have also predeceased her.
Survivors include three sons, Harold W. Johnson of Florida, William F. Johnson of Scarborough and Steven E. Johnson and his wife Debbie of South Portland, two daughters, Melinda P. Brewster of Gorham and Melissa D. Spear and her husband Chris of Standish; eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. (Portland Press Herald 6/23/2013)
