They remained together until Wilbert's death in 1994. Esther's teaching career took her to Berryville, Bedford, and Clifton Forge, all in Virginia. She and her husband finally settled in Covington where she enjoyed a long and dedicated career of more than thirty years. Her Covington High students showed their love and respect for her by dedicating their 1992 Yearbook, "Puff and Patches", to her for "Excellence in Education". She was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church where she was a Deaconess, Trustee, Assistant Treasurer and Chair of Family and Friends Day activities. She also continued her dedication to education by arranging Church recognition of students graduating from high school. Esther was affiliated with many professional organizations. She was particularly proud to have been a charter member of the Delta Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at Saint Paul's Polytechnic Institute and was honored by them when they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 2002.
