EAST PEORIA - Okja Grzesik Blackwell passed away at 3:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at her home in East Peoria.
She was born Jan. 28, 1937, in Taegu, Korea, the daughter of Mon Gil and Bae Agi Lee. She married Stanley A. Grzesik in 1960 in Seoul, South Korea. She later married Robert E. Blackwell on Aug. 4, 1982, in Peoria. He passed away in September 2005 in East Peoria.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and one stepdaughter, Kathi Schlick.
Surviving are one son, Dr. John Grzesik of Highland Park, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Jan (Larry) Etzkorn of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two stepgrandsons, Dr. Jeremy Etzkorn of St. Louis, Mo., and Todd Schlick of Conway, S.C.; and one stepgranddaughter, Dr. Kristin Etzkorn of Philadelphia, Pa. She is further survived by one sister, Yun Hui (Donald) Langworthy of N. Hudson, N.Y.; three brothers in Korea; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Okja was a loving mother and wife.
She immigrated to the United States in 1962 and lived the American dream. A testament to her love for this country, her proudest achievement was becoming a U.S. citizen in May 1990.
She enjoyed traveling and watching football.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Remmert Funeral Home, 521 E. Washington, East Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. At Okja's request, cremation rites will be accorded after the services. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Notre Dame, Ind., at a later date.
