Birth: 1831
Wayne County
Indiana, USA
Death: May 25, 1874
Porter County
Indiana, USA

Elihu was born to Levi Lee and an unknown mother in Wayne County, Indiana. He was the last of 3 boys (Henry, Jehue & Elihu) and 4 girls (Anna, Eda, Elizabeth & Martha). They ranged in age from 3-21, with the last sister also having the same mother. The others were born to 1 or 2 former wives who had died earlier.

Sometime in 1835, Levi took his family to Kosciusko County, Indiana to live. He purchased land in what is now Leesburg, laid out lots and built a home. Then he went back to Wayne Co. and married (for the 3rd or 4th time) and brought Sophia (Holmes- the sister of Henry's first wife, Lucinda) back to Leesburg. Now Elihu had a stepmother.

The three eldest children were married, so the household consisted of the parents, two teens, a 6 yr. old sister and Elihu, age 3.

The family was running a water mill on Turkey Creek and some were farming.

When Elihu was 8 years old, his father, stepmother and possibly an infant sibling died. He and his sister, Martha, were placed in the hands of the elder children to raise. Elihu was probably living with either his sister, Anna & her husband Thomas Harper, or brother, Jehue & his wife Rosanna. Both have a boy the right age in their households in 1840.

In 1850, Elihu is 19 yrs. old and living with his brother, Henry & family in Kosciusko County. He is listed as a wagon maker, which is the same occupation Jehue followed.

By 1860 he has moved to Porter County with most of his siblings, married Rosanna Adams (18 March 1855), started a family, and was farming.

Drafted into the army on 26 October 1862, he served 2 years and 9 months in an Indiana Regiment. He was mustered out 21 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. (from U.S. Civil War Soldier Records found on Ancestry)

Returning home, he continued to farm until he died.

Note: While the stone application records indicate he died in 1875, this is in error. The Porter County records note May 1874 and his wife remarried in December of 1874.
