Chester M. "Chet" Lee, 80, was a retired U.S. Navy Capt. a World War II veteran and senior NASA engineer who who died Feb. 23, was buried March 13 in a service at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Lee died in Washington of cardiac arrest following heart surgery.
During a distinguished naval career, he survived the sinking of a destroyer in 1945 after a kamikaze attack, and went on to help develop the Polaris missile. He joined NASA in 1968.
During his 22 years at NASA, he served as assistant mission director for Apollo moon missions 1 through 11, mission director for Apollo 12 through 17 and program director for the Apollo-Soyuz test project. He later served as director of space shuttle operations and then director of shuttle utilization services before finishing his NASA career as the agency's assistant associate administrator for policy and Defense Department affairs. he retired from NASA in 1987 to help found Spacehab Inc., a Washington-based commercial space services company he worked for until his death.
