JOE LEE BURIED SUNDAY 3 P.M.
ROCKDALE MAN, 71 YEARS OLD, DIED EARLY SATURDAY AFTER TWO WEEKS ILLNESS
Following a serious illness which extended through several weeks, J. W. Lee, age 71 years, passed away at his home here early Saturday morning.
Funeral services were held from the home at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon when Rev. L. E. Strickland, pastor of the Baptist church, officiated, and a selected choir sang favorite hymns. Interment was made in Oak Lawn cemetery. The floral offerings sent as a last tribute to this godly man were numerous and beautiful.
J. W. Lee, better known as Joe Lee, a native of Troy, Alabama, came to Fayette county, Texas, when quite young but had spent the greater part of his life in Milam county. For more than fifty years he had lived in or near Rockdale.
He was married to Miss Annie Prewitt, September 22, 1892, and to this union were born four daughters. The family has lived continuously in Rockdale for the past thirty years. For many years Mr. Lee was engaged in the farming industry and he was also associated with the business life of the city, having been a stockholder in the old Rockdale Mercantile Co. He later was with the Old Scarbrough & Hicks Co., where he continued, as all through life, to enjoy the popularity and esteem of people in all walks of life.
Mr. Lee retired from his business career some years ago to look after his farming interests west of town and was active up to the time of his recent illness. He was never happier than when being with friends and as he rode daily to his farm his cheerful and hearty salute was always a source of pleasure to those he chanced to meet.
Deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Prewitt Lee, four daughters, Mrs. R. L. Long, of Waco, Mrs. H. O. Quebe of Rockdale, Mrs. J. D. Peeples Jr., of Milano, Mrs. J. C. Wilkerson of Cameron; two grandsons, Roy Lee Long, and Jack Quebe Wilkerson; and one sister, Mrs. J. W. Eanes of Chriesman. A number of nieces and nephews also survive."
