LaVerle Marion (Leavitt) Ackerman was born April 16, 1928 in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin to William "Shorty" Leavitt and Neila (Alexander) Leavitt. The second eldest of five children, LaVerle came to Quilcene in 1933 with her parents and siblings LaMoine Leavitt, LaWanda (Leavitt) McCone, Bernice (Leavitt) Jackson and Gary Leavitt.
LaVerle married Alvin Ackerman on January 6, 1948, in Port Townsend and they raised their four children in Quilcene. Their children include Kristy Ackerman, Susan (Ackerman) Cook, Kenneth Ackerman and Linda (Ackerman) Hilsabeck.
From the time LaVerle was a young child she worked in the woods cutting shakes with her parents. And in her adult years LaVerle would take all the children on trips to the forest with Alvin to cut shakes and instill them a strong work ethic. LaVerle and Alvin also ran a second-hand sale barn store at their Quilcene residence for more than 10 years. Among the many items sold were antiques and hand-made windmills that Alvin would build and LaVerle would paint. The two made a great team.
LaVerle enjoyed traveling with her family and spending time with her 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. LaVerle was treasurer for the Quilcene VFW for many years and a member of the Washington State Old Time Fiddlers Association. She enjoyed baking, gardening, Quilcene alumni events, threshing bees and parades and festivals throughout the Olympic Peninsula. We will miss LaVerle so very much.
