Funeral service for Erwin Dale Leaverton, age 79 of Edmond, Oklahoma, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2008, in the College Heights Baptist Church. Rev. Gene Jorgenson will officiate. Erwin Dale Leaverton was born the son of Dale Jay Leaverton and Nellie Mae Coley Leaverton on April 22, 1929, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He died on October 14, 2008, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after a courageous battle against Leukemia. He married Joan Smith on December 21, 1956, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Erwin attended grade school in Stillwater and Tulsa and graduated from Will Rogers High School. While in high school, he took flying lessons, solo'ed at age 16 and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Other high school interests were wrestling, glee club, and playing the violin in the school orchestra. After attending two years at Oklahoma A and M (now Oklahoma State University), he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 where he did his basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Erwin was then assigned to A and E School at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, and then afterwards was assigned to A and E Instructor School at Sheppard AFB. His next assignment was at Amarillo AFB where he helped open the first Jet Aircraft and Engineering School. Later Erwin was assigned to Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia and he worked on the first B-52 (A) Bomber. After his military service, he worked at several aircraft manufacturing plants (Boeing in Seattle with the experimental flight program, and General Motors in Kansas City with F-94-F military jets). Erwin returned to Stillwater in 1955 and attended OSU, majoring in Agricultural Engineering. After graduating, he worked for the USDA-Soil Conservation Service/Natural Resources Conservation Service for 26 years in positions of Project Engineer, Watershed Construction Engineer, and Staff Leader. Erwin was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Oklahoma. After a brief retirement period, Erwin was employed as an AML Engineer by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission for the Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Program until 1990. In retirement, he valued his time spent with his family, fishing, gardening and playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include:wife: Joan Leaverton of the home; son and wife: Michael Dale and Diane Leaverton of Pearland, Texas; daughter and husband: Lisa and Royce Hannah of Chickasha; grandson and granddaughter: J. D. and Mikayla Leaverton of Pearland, Texas; granddaughters: Elizabeth and Ashley Hannah of Chickasha; brother: LeRoy Max Leaverton of Donna, Texas; brother: Ronald Coley Leaverton of Broken Arrow. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Perkins Cemetery in Perkins, Oklahoma. Services will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
