Sad Blow to the Community
Frances E. Brokaw, daughter of Horace and Nancy Learned, was born in Morgan county, Ohio, April 9, 1843. Her mother died when she was five years of age. With her father she moved to Mahaska county, Iowa, in 1850. Two years later her father died. Afterward she came to Linn county, Iowa, where she lived with an aunt until she was united in marriage to Isaac Brokaw, Jan. 26, 1865. To this union were born seven children, James P. who died in infancy, Samuel E. who is still at home, Willis E., Oran C., and Frank A., who reside near home; Mesdames May Thompson and Christa Caskey of Cheteau, Montana. The deceased had seven grandchildren, also a sister, Mrs. Martha Morris of Augusta, Kansas, and a brother, Presley Learned of Eldorado, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Brokaw came to Queen City, in 1869, and in 1870 moved to their present beautiful home, where the loving wife and devoted mother after a brief illness departed this life, October 6, 1905, aged 62 years, 5 months and 27 days. The funeral was held at the residence, Sunday, October 8, conducted by Rev. W.C. McClelland. Interment made in Walnut Grove cemetery. It was one of the largest funerals in the history of Mercer township and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large number of her old neighbors and friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect to one they had known so long and loved so well. In her death there is a vacancy in the community that will be hard to fill.
