Charles J. Leahy, 87, of Ottumwa, took his Heavenly Journey Home on April 25, 2012 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born August 20, 1924 in Ottumwa to John C. and Elizabeth McDavitt Leahy. He married Mary Catherine Gavin on March 28, 1952. She preceded him in death January 18, 2004. A resident of Ottumwa all of his life, he served in the U.S.Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Jon Deere Ottumwa Works for 40 years, retiring in 1983.
Chuck adored his beloved wife and devoted his life to caring for her during her battle with Alzheimer's. He enjoyed attendig Saturday evening church services and going out to eat with his son, Michael afterwards. Chuck will be remembered as an ornery, fun loving guy who teased his caregivers with his cane on a daily basis at Prairie Hills.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and John Deere Retirees.
Surviving are a son, Michael Leahy of Ottumwa; a granddaughter, Kristin(Bronson)Eick of Ottumwa; two step-daughters, Cathy Harden of Lake Zurich, IL and Patty Harden of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Bill; three sisters, Gerada, Catherine and Marjorie.
Funeral Mass will be 1 pm Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B.Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Visitation with the family present will be 11 am to 12:30 pm Friday at Reece Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
