Maud Rema Lawton-Allen, or Rema as she preferred, was born in New Orleans, LA. Her father was James Lawton, Jr. and her mother was Caroline(Carrie)Courtney-Lawton of South Carolina. Their home was in Algiers, LA. Upon their deaths they were interned in the family plot in Orleans Parish at St Patrick's Cemetery #1 in Section 5. James and Carrie's parents were native to Ireland, per the census report.
Rema's siblings were Lillian A Lawton-b.Aug 24, 1889, James Lawton-b.June 3, 1891, Leona Lawton-b.Sept 22, 1893, Irene Lawton-b.July 11, 1895, Carrie Lawton-b.March 5, 1899, Loretta Lawton-b.Nov 15, 1900, Michael Joseph Lawton-b.Nov 5, 1902, and Mary Olga Bernadette Lawton-b.Nov 6, 1906.
Rema left Algiers, LA at age 16 for a visit with a sister in Miami. During her visit she met Eugene Bridges Allen, a 32 year old Florida East Coast conductor. As her mother, Carrie kept writing and demanding she return home, Rema had other ideas. She and Eugene were married shortly thereafter.
As Eugene worked the railway traveling from Key West to New Orleans, Rema raised their only child, Mildred Lenora Allen, cooked and kept house.
Eugene moved the family to New Smyrna Beach when Mildred was about nine years old. While living there Rema had one other pregnancy, a boy. The pregnancy was terminated as it was tubular. Rema was devastated and deeply affected for years.
The family moved back to Miami where Mildred attended junior high and graduated from Miami Edison High School with Honors. Rema enjoyed entertaining, was considered an excellent cook and kept an immaculate home.
Eventually, Eugene retired from the railroad and began suffering the effects of colon cancer. Rema moved to Ft Lauderdale to be near her daughter and grandchildren and have help with Eugene's illness. Eugene died in 1961.
When Mildred and Bill divorced in 1962 Rema moved back to Miami, FL. A few years later, Rema was persuaded to sell her property in Miami and move in with Mildred where she lived out her years in Fort Lauderdale, there she passed away. She was interned next to her husband.
She will always be warmly remembered by her all of her grandchildren, Leslie Allen Leonard, Mickie Allen Leonard and Jerald Allen Leonard. "Granny", as she was affectionately known, was the happy, bubbly, caring person who saw her grandchildren through the many storms and trails of childhood.
