Marquette - Grace M. DeVoe, age 91, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, September 18, 2013, at the Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, in the loving, comforting care of her family and the caregivers of U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Grace was born November 29, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York to Richard and Martha (Schultz) Lawson. When Grace was five years old, her family relocated to Savannah Georgia and remained there until her senior year of high school, when they moved to Florida. Following graduation in 1940, Grace returned to Georgia where she attended Georgia State Women's College, pursuing a course of study in liberal arts, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1944. Later that year, on November 1, 1944, Grace married John DeVoe, whom she previously met at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia while John was in service. Following World War II, the couple moved to Marquette so John could finish college at Northern Michigan College (now NMU). With the completion of John's degree, the couple moved to Grand Rapids, where they established their home and began raising a family. Grand Rapids remained their home for 50 plus years, with summers spent at the cottage in Marquette. Following John's retirement, the couple spent winters in Mexico and Florida, experiencing many great adventures traveling the Mexican highways, always making new friends along the way. In her leisure, Grace loved arts and crafts. Over the years, she knit over 4,000 baby hats which were donated to various Shriner's Children's Hospitals. Every family member and friend who had a newborn received a hat from Gracie. When she discovered her love of photography, she became the designated family photographer. With her love of music, she often played the piano for her own "amazement". Her family was everything to her and she considered her friends so close that they became family as well. Gracie's mantra... "I love you, I love you, I love you" followed by a big hug. Grace is survived by her husband of 68 years, John. H. DeVoe; her children, Martha (Jon) Alexander of Grand Rapids, Bob DeVoe of St. Paul, MN, Bill (Susan) DeVoe of Faithorn, and a daughter-in-law, Deb DeVoe, of Grand Rapids; her grandchildren, Jason Alexander (Larry Brayman), Ann (Tom) Golden, Jamie DeVoe, Michelle Barnett, Sarah DeVoe, Kate (Bryan) Schumann, Eric DeVoe, Madelyn DeVoe and Reid DeVoe; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Rosbolt of Port Huron, FL; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ben; and two sisters. Private burial will be made at the Park Cemetery.
