Command Sergeant Major Marvin Lawrence Knowles, Ret. died January 28, 2008, from lung cancer. Born March 28, 1932 in Roanoke, Va., he was the beloved son of Walter Earnest Knowles and Josephine Elizabeth Sink Knowles. He proudly served our country in the United States Army for more than 35 years, retiring October 31, 1982 as a Command Sergeant Major. He started his military career as a Private in the 29th Infantry Division of the National Guard in 1947 and then switched to the Army in 1954. He served four tours of duty in Germany, one in Korea (1963 to 1964) and one in Vietnam (1967 to 1968). While in Germany he met his bride, Christa Renate Nerlich. They married in Nellingen, Germany on November 14, 1956. Their twin sons, Richard and Robert, were born at Fort Hood, Texas in 1959. He completed his career as Fort Belvoir's Post Command Sergeant Major from 1981 to 1982. They retired in 1982 to Petersburg, Va. where Christa lost her battle with cancer on April 12, 2005. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Lee and Kathleen Fumiko, Richard Roy and Mary Catherine; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Melvyn Watson; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Guenther and Helga Germeier Nerlich, Renate Gisela Croy, and Marian Dixon Knowles; grandchildren, Dustin Hideo, Aaron Robert, Mary Elizabeth Minna, and Kurt William; nephews and nieces, David F. Watson, Dixie K. Miller, Vicki K. Smith, Andreas Nerlich, Stephanie A. Croy, and Alexander S. Croy; and dear cousin, Opal K. Fulton. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Villa Heights Baptist Church in Roanoke, with the Reverend Jake Huffman officiating. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on February 6, 2008 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the National D-Day Memorial Fund, Route 122 S., Bedford, Va., (540-586-3329) or Duke HomeCare and Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, N.C. 27704.
