Jeanne d'Arc M. Houle, 80, of Volmer Country Living Center in North Vassalboro died Wednesday.
She was born in Winslow, one of 18 children of Peter and Ada LaVerdiere, attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, Waterville, and graduated from the Presentation of Mary Convent in Coaticook, Quebec.
In 1940, she married Abram J. Houle. He died previously.
After returning to Maine, she worked at the Sisters of Charity Hospital, Waterville, and in 1959 went to work for Volmer Nursing Home. She became administrator there and served in that capacity for the remainder of her career, retiring in 1993 at age 75.
Mrs. Houle was a communicant of St. Bridget's Church, North Vassalboro, a member of St. Theresa Circle, Daughters of Isabella, a member and officer of the TOPS weight-loss program, and a member of the Vassalboro Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, active participation in the Volmer Activity Program, her weekly craft group and the fellowship they offered her, and she was very devoted to her grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John (Charlotte) Picher of Augusta, Mrs. Roland (Janet) Drouin of North Vassalboro and Roberta Houle of Waterville; a son, John Houle of North Waterboro; a brother, Laurier LaVerdiere of Winslow; a sister, Yvonne Albert of Unity; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bridget's Church with the Rev. Donald Daigle officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville. (Portland Press Herald 11/20/1998)
