Vivian Laughlin Fleming
Georgetown, Texas – Vivian Fleming, formerly of Emporia, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at her home in Georgetown, Texas. She was 98.
Mrs. Fleming taught at Kansas Avenue School from 1956 until she retired in 1974.
The daughter of Irving Austin and Anna Anderson Laughlin, she was born June 2, 1911, at Americus [KS]. Her family moved to Emporia in 1916. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1928, received a life teaching certificate from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and later graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor's degree in education.
She married Fred Lockwood Fleming in 1935 at Emporia. He died Aug. 3, 1982, at Emporia.
Mrs. Fleming was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1923. She was a charter member of P.E.O. Chapter ES and a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Kappa Gamma, Friends of the Library, Social Services and Etude Study Club. She participated in many volunteer activities and served on several boards in the Lyon County area.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol Lynn North, of Georgetown, Texas; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, including Eric Thomas of Emporia; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A son, Philip Fred Fleming, died in 1999. Two sisters, Helen Laughlin and Lucille Jones; and a brother, Albert Laughlin, also died earlier.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. May 8 in C.D. Longs Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, after which there will be a reception for family and friends at the church. The Rev. Jayne Duncan will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
