Matilda was born February 1860 in Pennsylvania per 1860 and 1870 census records, information given by her parents. Later records she personally claimed she was born in Delaware. Her parents were Springer Speer and Ann Greenhalgh. The family was living in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware on the 1860 census, Matilda was 5 months old when the census was done. She married her sister Margaret's widower, Thomas H. Latimer on December 16, 1886 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. They had three sons together- Homer, Thomas and Henry.
