He was born December 9, 1839 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana and departed this life April 19, 1919 at the age of 79 yrs., 4 mos. and 10 days. He moved with his parents to Wapello Co., Iowa in April 1860 and went back to Indiana, February 1861 and enlisted in Co. A 9th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry on August 14th, 1861, and was discharged at Camp Andrew Jackson, Tenn., March 17, 1862. By reason of disability. Re-enlisted July 19, 1862, in Co. A 72nd Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was discharged at Indianapolis, Indiana, July 6, 1865. Services no longer required. Both enlistments were at Delphi, Carroll Co., Indiana. He was 21 years old when he enlisted and 5" 51/2 inches tall.

After being discharged he came back to Iowa in July 1865, and was married to Miss Nancy Ellen Kerr January 29, 1867. To this union were born 10 children. His wife, Mrs. Nancy Ellen Lathrop and 4 children, 3 daughters Mrs. Almedia C. Shields, Mrs. Mary E. Berkey and Eva Fand and one son, Elmer H., preceded him in death. Those that survive are one half sister, Mrs. Emma Fisk, (son) Joseph Joe of near Eddyville, John W. of Kirkville, Thomas L., and Frank A. of Ottumwa, Mrs. Annie M. Roseman (daughter) of Carbon Cliff, Ill. and Mrs. Clara Edna Byrum of near Blakesburg, Iowa. Fifteen grandchildren; Orville, Carl, Edgar and Wilbur Shields, and Mrs. Blanche Christy, William and Elsie Lathrop, Lawrence and Clifford Byrum,Irene Roseman and Harvey, and Ralph Lathrop, Fay, Grace, and Owen Byrum and one great-grandchild, Dorthy Ethelyn Shields, two grandsons, Carl R. Shields and William T. Lathrop have been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

He belonged to the J.M. Tuttle G.A.R. Post of South Ottumwa, Iowa. He joined the Methodist Protestant Church Dec. 26, 1901, at the age of 62 yrs. and filled various positions in the church.

He was a teacher of the First Bible Class over six years; steward over four years; Class leader and assistant over four years; secretary of the MT. Zion Circuit for five years. Elected for the sixth time but resigned by reason of not being able to make the trips over rought roads and through bad weather. Had charge of the Sunday school in the absence of the superintendent for three years. Also, three years a s co-preacher for MT. Zion Circuit for the years 1907 to 1910. We regret the loss of our loving father, grandfather. His death is deeply mourned by his children, grandchildren and other relatives, as well as a large circle of friends and neighbors. The body was tenderly laid to rest in the family lot in the Brooks Cemetery, between Ottumwa, Iowa and Blakesburg, Iowa.
