Mrs. Verna Latham Abney, age 79, of Fruithurst, AL, passed away March 16, 2013. Mrs. Abney was born September 17, 1933 in Delta, AL to the late Ulus and Alice Latham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Abney; sister, Janice Marie Latham; brother, Gerald Latham and brother in law, Ralph Johnson.

Mrs. Abney was a teacher for the Cleburne County School System. She was active in her church Harmony Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and always volunteered for VBS; she loved to read and was a ceramic hobbyist. She loved music and was a song leader. She had a servant's heart always helping others and putting others first.

Mrs. Abney is survived by her son and daughter in law, Jeff and Martie Abney of Tallapoosa; sisters, Ruby Johnson of Jacksonville, AL and Evelyn Blaylock of Fort Payne, AL; brother and sisters in law, Edward and Annie Latham of Lineville, AL and Peggy Hughes of Weaver, AL; grandchildren, Samuel Abney of Athens, GA, Ellen Abney and Peter Abney both of Tallapoosa; step-grandchildren, Laura Oliver (Chip) of Commerce, GA, Stephen Sailors of Bremen and Virginia Sailors of Tallapoosa; and one step-great-grandson, Trip Oliver.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 3:00 PM EST from Harmony Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Prestridge and Rev. James Owen officiating. Music will be provided by Harold McWhorter, Martie Abney and Jim Winchester. Pallbearers serving will be Philip Abney, Terry Hulsey, Charley Adams, Ray Clevenger, Bill Stephens, Brad Ormond, Edward Latham. Interment will follow in Upper Cane Creek Cemetery.
