Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as a Captain in the 9th Virginia Cavalry regiment, Company F, which was known as the "Essex Light Dragoons". He was killed during General J.E.B. Stuart's famous "Ride around McClellan", a mission that skirted completely around the Federal Army of the Potomac during June< 12-15, 1862. The only fatality among 6 casualties sustained by the Confederates during this event, his death became romanticized in art and poetry both durign and after the war.
