Shirley was born in Oneida, N.Y., a daughter of Alfred & Lulu Dawley Laon. She was a 1942 graduate of Oneida High School and later that year married Lt. Harold D. Sparks Jr. in Oneida, N.Y. Mr. Sparks passed away in 1971.
A longtime resident of Oneida and Sylvan Beach, Shirley worked as a dental assistant and secretary for many years. She also served as treasurer of the Oneida Lake East shore Merchants Assoc.,
The family would like to thank and praise the staff of Stonehedge Nursing Home for the wonderful care bestowed on their Mom, "Granny" and "Mimi" for the two and a half years she resided there.
Surviving are her four daughters, Cheryl Salerno of Blossvale, Constance Evans and Carole Arcellana both of Napa, Calif. and Cathleen Johnson of Salem, Ore., 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Shirley's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral arrangements are under the direction of the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Camden, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or your local humane society.
