DOROTHY L. LANT HESSE, of BRICK, formerly of Somerville, died Friday, Jan. 19, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. Dorothy was born July 23, 1921, in Newark. Mrs. Hesse graduated from high school in Newark in 1938. After graduating from Comptometer School in Newark, she worked at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in the accounting department. On Christmas Eve 1942, Walter and Dorothy were married in St. John's Lutheran Church in Newark, and immediately after being married, they moved to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hesse was commissioned into the Navy. Dorothy was able to stay behind and support herself due to mastery of the Comptometer and training. Following the War, they moved to Somerville in 1947, where they lived until 1970. While in Somerville, Dorothy became very active in many of the local organizations, most notably, Solomon's Lodge of the Eastern Star, Somerville. In 1970, they moved to Brick and purchased a lot in the area of North Drive off Princeton Avenue. As the Hesse family summered in Bay Head, they had enjoyed boating their whole lives and were really able to enjoy it now that they lived right at the junction of the Metedeconk River and Barnegat Bay areas. Dorothy greatly enjoyed serving as Walter's first mate. They became members of the Crescent Temple Yacht Club in the Metedeconk section of Brick. By the late 1970s, they had taken many voyages with the yacht club to Florida and Block Island, most notably in their boat named the "Antidote." They began to winter in Florida and became members of the Boca Raton Yacht Club.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 64 years, Walter K. Hesse, and five nieces and two nephews, Pamela Kirch and brother Arthur Hesse, Diane Hesse, Debbie Rogan and brother, Albert Hesse and Kathleen Raebender and Linda Greco, both sisters. She is also survived by numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick. A funeral service will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
