Burgess Langston Altman, widow of W.W. Altman , died Sunday, March 31, 2002 while residing at the Mullins Nursing Center in Mullins. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of James Edward and Ellen Burgess Langston. She was a 1930 graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill and had done graduate studies at the University of South Carolina and Winthrop College. She was a retired school teacher for 36 years, having taught at Central High School in Bishopville and Johnsonville Elementary School in Johnsonville. She was featured in leaders of American Elementary Education having been nominated by Johnsonville Elementary School.

She was a member of the National Education Association, the S.C. Education Assoc., the Florence County Education Assoc., Delta Kappa Gamma, Teacher Honor Society and a board member of PSI, County Chapter. She was a member of Johnsonville Woman's Club, having served as Pres., V. Pres., Sec. and Treas. She was a charter member of Johnsonville American Legion Auxiliary, having served as Sec. and Treas. She was a member of the S.C. Rural Letter Carriers Assoc. (State, Dist. and Co.). She served on the State Board. She was an active member of Johnsonville First Baptist Church, a member of the Ruth Bible Class, WMU, and church pianist for many years.

She was predeceased by daughter, Dora Norment Altman and sister, Adelaide L. Darby.
