Pioneer Lady Passes Away - At Age of 91
Mary L. Caldwell, Who came West in "Covered Wagon" Days, Laid at Rest
Mrs. Mary Langford Caldwell, 91, passed away in this city last Friday, following an illness of but few days. Funeral services in charge of Rev. B. W. Rice were held from the Case funeral home, 1408 Dearborn Street, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment was in Canyon Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Caldwell was born in Clay County, Ind., February 25, 1830 [sic], her maiden name being Margaret Langford. She was a pioneer of both Utah and Idaho crossing the plains with the family in a covered wagon drawn by oxen from the old home in Indiana to Utah in 1852. This was three years after the gold rush to California in 1849, and eight years before the outbreak of the civil war. She married Abraham Vaughn Caldwell in the fall of 1857 in Utah. Twenty-three years later she, with her husband and children, moved from Utah to Cassia county, Idaho Territory, where Mr. Caldwell died in 1899, the year the state was admitted to the Union. The first settlement in the territory was only 18 years old when the family arrived from Utah. There were no telephones, telegraphs, highways or other modern conveniences in 1852 or manifestations of civilization in the Pacific northwest which we now enjoy. Utah and Idaho Territory were then desert areas occupied mostly by Indians. She loved the west and had the privilege of seeing it grow from its desert condition to its present development.
In 1904, Mrs. Caldwell and the children moved from Cassia county to the Payette Valley. Since that time the family has lived in the vicinity of Emmett and Caldwell.
She was the mother of twelve children, seven of whom preceded her in death. Surviving members are three sons, and two daughters namely: J. F. Caldwell, L. W. Caldwell, G. E. Caldwell, all of this city, Mrs. Mary Bishop of Central Cove and Mrs. Edna Stolzenburg of Middleton.
