Mrs. Gwendolyn Odom Lang (Granny) a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama departed this life September 12, 2009. Born August 3, 1929 to the late Claude Odom, Sr. and Mary Margaret Miller, the second of four children, she was baptized as an infant at Big Zion A.M.E. Zion Church and accepted Christ at an early age. She was educated in the Mobile County School System and was a 1947 graduate of Dunbar High School. She attended the Spaulding Business College where she met her husband Harold Lang. To this union, seven children were born, After her marriage, she united with the Warren Street Episcopal Methodist Church, now Toulminville- Warren Street United Methodist Church. She served faithfully throughout her church by working in the following ministries: Sunday School, Altar Guild, Good Samaritans, Servant Leader, Mature Adults and the United Methodist Women where she served both on the local and District level. She was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Mary Margaret Odom, brother, Joseph Odom, and grandson Barry Lang, Jr. Survivors include a loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Harold Lang; three daughters, Deborah L. (Wendell) Love, Atlanta, GA; Valerie L. Forte, Birmingham, AL; Harolyn L. Ezell, Mobile, AL; four sons; Barry D. (Charisse) Lang, Sacramento, CA; Terence O. (Thelma) Lang, Sr., Adrian S. (Cynthia) Lang, Kirven R. (Franchesca) Lang, Sr., all of Mobile, AL; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren, two brothers Thomas (Cora) Odom, Grambling, LA; Claude (Lavonia) Odom, Jr. Sacramento, CA; sister-in-law, Ethel Odom, Shreveport, LA; a devoted friend Edwena Seals, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Special thanks to Jira Roberts, the SPCU, CCU, and the entire 5th floor Nursing Staff at Mobile Infirmary Hospital for their diligence, understanding and hard work. Visitation Saturday September 19, 2009 at 9:00a.m. Funeral at 11:00a.m. at Toulminville-Warren Street United Methodist Church. Eulogy by The Rev. James A. Henderson. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the United Methodist Women of Toulminville-Warren in her honor. Arrangements by Johnson-Allen Funeral Home, 600 Chestnut Street Mobile, AL 36603. Published in Press-Register on September 18, 2009
