Birth: Dec. 26, 1919
Death: Mar. 11, 2009

George Wilson Lang, "Brother" a lifelong resident of Mobile, AL for 89 years, transitioned peacefully Wednesday, March 11th at his home with his devoted and loving wife; Esther P. Lang of 65 years, and daughter; Theresa Lang Coaxum (Edward), grandson; Kern M. (Stephanie) Jackson, and a host of family and friends at his bedside. He was preceded in death by his parents; George Leslie and Celestine Herman Lang, brother; James Leslie Lang, two sisters; Ora Lee Lang Allen and Alice Marie Lang, Senior. He leaves behind two brothers that will cherish wonderful memories, Herman B. (Juanita) Lang and Eugene W. (Idella) Lang. He attended St. Patrick and Most Pure Heart of Mary Schools, graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School, and a graduate of Alabama State Junior College (now Bishop State Community College). He was a dedicated member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Church and the high school's Assistant Football coach for over 25 years. He was an active member of St. Vincent DePaul, assisting in the distribution of food to needy parishioners and the community, and he continued to serve as a dedicated Eucharistic minister for many years. He retired with 32 years from the U. S. Postal Service where he acted in a supervisory capacity in the Special Delivery Department. He knew how to provide anyone with directions to any street and alley of the City. A unique person, he was proud to give his time toward strengthening his community by serving on numerous Boards; such as, The Mobile County Urban League, Mobile Community Organization Board, Azalea Boys and Girls Club, his beloved Knights of St. Peter Claver and one of the selected hosts for the Senior Bowl (prior to integration). During this time, he assisted minority players with housing, and carefully educated them about the City of Mobile. He was proud to boast when Franco Harris, an NFL Pittsburgh Steeler, was one of the guys who ate at his kitchen table. Always active, he was also a longtime member of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association and also a founding and charter member of the Comrades, Inc. (Social and Civic Club) - enjoying decades of great years and numerous occasions to celebrate. He was a gentleman with enormous spiritual and ethical values and all who knew him valued his willingness to love, forgive, and serve his family, friends, and community. Even with all of these accolades, his greatest achievement by far was always being daddy to Theresa his "baby", husband to Esther, and grandpa to his "number one son" Kern, and to his loving granddaughter Courtney. Services will be at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, 304 Sengstak St., on Monday, March 16, 2009 with visitation commencing at 9:00 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. and the interment will immediately follow the service at the Catholic Cemetery. Father Patrick Healy, S. S. J. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Most Pure Heart of Mary School - donated to a fund for children in need.
