Alta E. Landon, 91, of Loup City died Friday, July 22, 2011, at home. Alta was born Dec. 16, 1919, to Leslie and Pearl (Leininger) Landon on the family farm in Sherman County.
Survivors are: sisters, Dorothy and Florence Landon of Loup City, and brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Bette Landon of Arcadia.
Alta received her elementary education at the Mixed Grove School. She attended and graduated from that school. Alta received Christ as her Savior during her high school days and was a member of a gospel team and ministered in that for several years.
For four years after graduation she helped on the family farm due to her dad's ill health. At this time the war took many young people to serve their country, leaving a shortage of teachers. Alta then began her teaching career. She first taught in the Charlton School. Then she taught the upper grades in Dannebrog and Rockville and six years in District 13, three miles south of Loup City. She taught the fourth grade in Loup City during her last 29 years. Her teaching career spanned a total of 41 years and 1,171 pupils.
Alta received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Nebraska on Aug. 4, 1961, at the same time her sisters did.
Following her retirement she became a member of Broken Bow's Country Store Group and spent time during November and December helping tend the store. During the rest of the year she embroidered dish towels, pillow cases, and crocheted afghans to sell. After eight years she decided to sell her handwork at craft fairs in Loup City, Ravenna, Arcadia and other locations.
Alta was an active member of First Baptist Church in Loup City for over 50 years. She served the church in the capacity of clerk and Sunday School secretary and treasurer. She assisted with Vacation Bible School for a number of summers.
Alta enjoyed reading her Bible and other Christian material, doing handwork, watching game shows on TV, and doing crossword puzzles.
Alta was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Erma Landon.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Loup City, NE.
