MARY FRANCES LANDIS was the 4th of 8 children born to Harmon Henry Landess and Susan Caroline Campbell. Her father was a wealthy landowner with homes in both Bedford and Franklin Counties, TN, and the family divided their time between the two homes. Harmon Landess has his biography in Goodspeed's History of Bedford Co., TN. Her mother's actual burial site is unknown, but Caroline Campbell Landess was born May 10, 1835 in Bedford Co., and died in Nashville May 16, 1904. Her Obit states her body was removed to Wartrace, Bedford Co. Harmon and Caroline were married May 24, 1853 in Bedford Co.

Frances's siblings were: Sarah M., b. 1854; Alfred Gordon, 1856-1936; George Washington, 1860-1917; Grace C. (Maupin) 1865-1901; William G., b. 1867; Mattie (Jenkins) 1872-1957; and Henry Harmon, 1875-1946.

Her grandparents were:
Henry Harmon Landess and Grace Thompson of Lincoln Co., TN
Alfred Campbell and Sarah Reaves of Bedford Co., TN

Frances married Joseph Henry Stephen March 13, 1884 in Franklin Co., TN. They moved to Nashville and Joseph was a Conductor for the NC & St. L. Railroad. They had 3 children: Guy Clonon, Grace Bramblett, and James Davis. There is no Link to the grave of Guy Clonon Stephens, born March 25, 1885 in Wartrace. As a young man Guy moved to Montana where he was a rancher and realtor. Guy died, Feb 5, 1943, in McCone Co., Montana, he was childless. Joseph died in 1904. Frances later married the widower, James Lodrick Baxter, 1853-1939, of Lynchburg.

Frances graduated from the Normal College in Winchester and taught for many years. She was the 1st President of the Order of Railway Conductors Ladies Auxiliary, an Eastern Star, and a member of the Christian Church. The last years of her life, she lived with her daughter, Grace Eddins. Her only grandchild was Mary Frances Eddins, and her only great grandchild was David Eddins Hill.
