It is with unfeigned sorrow that the Courier announces to its readers the death of one of Lafayette's brightest and most promising young business men, Mr. Paul Landes, of the milling firm of Frey and Landes. His death occured at 4:30 o'clock yesterday at his home on the corner of Lincoln and Douglass streets. His demise, long foretold, was the close of protracted suffering, he having been ill since December last and the greater part of the time confined to bed with troubles located in the throat and lungs. Though the illness occasioned he was ever confident of ultimate recovery but the stealthy inroads of the treacherous disease were too much for a constitution already undermined and despite the tender attenetion of loving friends the end came all too soon.
Aaron Paul Landes was born November 27, 1856, in Lehigh county, Pennsylvania. When he came to Indiana he located at Rossville, where he held a position as bookeeper for some time. On May 23, 1878, he was married to Mary A. Lisick. His married life includes the happiest period of his life. By this union three children were born, two boys and a girl. When Mr. Landes came to this city he entered the employ of Litzenberger and Frey, the millers, as bookeeper. About five years ago he and his brother purchased Mr. Litzenberger's interest in what is known as the Planet Mills. He was member of Lafayette Lodge No 51 K. of P., and Wabash Tribe No. 11, L.O.R.M.
The deceased was a true gentleman in the fullest sense of the word. Modest and unassuming, his quiet but earnest bearing won all who knew him, and his noble character stands out in bold relief, an everlasting monument in the memory of his friends. With is family he was ever the tender loving husband and devoted father, casting his all with the loved ones, whose slighest wish was a love to him in the fulfillment of his fatherly duty.
The funeral will take place from the late residence at 10 o'clock Sunday morning under the auspices of the orders to which he belonged. The interment will be made at the Greenbush cemetery. (Lafayette Daily Courier, 29 Mar 1889)
