Coroner Rules Death of J. H. Land Accidental After Probe Today
The death this morning of James H. Land 74, of Route 2, by a shotgun blast in the head, was ruled accidental by Newton County Coroner James L. Haddock. Mr. Land, a resident of the area for 51 years, was the father of Newton County's sheriff-elect, Forrest F. (Frosty) Land.
Coroner Haddock stated shortly before noon that he found no evidence to indicate Mr. Land might have taken his own life. An investigation of the scene of the accident on the Land farm, west of Neosho on Highway 86, indicated Mr. Land had hastily loaded a shotgun from the garage with shells taken from the glove compartment of his truck.
Mr. Haddock said Mr. Land had been trying to kill a dog that had been seen around the farm recently. "It seems apparent he (Mr. Land) ran from the truck, around the garage, evidently in pursuit of the dog, and must have fallen, "with the gun", Mr. Haddock stated. The charge struck him in the head, killing him instantly."
The coroner continued, revealing evidence that Mr. Land had recently completed negotiations to sell his farm and had several matters to attend to, including repairs to a cattle chute and pen on the farm. Mr. Haddock said Mr. Land was dressed for the weather, indicating he intended to be working out of doors during the morning.
"He had just eaten breakfast at his home," Mr. Haddock said. The time of the accident was placed at 7:25 a. m. Mr. Land was born March 29, 1890 at Wheaton.
