Dorcas Jackson, 63, of Bella Vista, died Nov. 24, 2011, in Rogers, Arkansas.

Dorcas Lambertson was born March 12, 1948, in Arkansas City, Kansas, to Milan and Esther Sissom Lambertson. Her parents served in various pastorates in the Midwest after her father became an American Baptist minister. She therefore grew up at Allen, Neb., Kansas City, Kan., and Shellsburg, Iowa. She attended Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kan., and graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kan.

She married Walter Lewis in 1969 in Arkansas City, Kan., and their son, Matthew, was born in Wichita in 1976. That fall, they drove up the Al-Can Highway and settled in Anchorage, Alaska, which was her home for the next 28 years.

Dorcas married Joseph A. Jackson in Anchorage in 1985 and helped raise his children, Hester and J.R. They were all deeply involved in the First American Baptist Church of Anchorage, where Dorcas especially enjoyed teaching children's Sunday school. While in Anchorage, she also earned her M.A. degree in public administration at the University of Alaska.

Always a friend and advocate for those less fortunate, Dorcas had a long career as a social worker; first for the State of Kansas and later in Alaska until her retirement. In the final years of her career, she was the chief public guardian for the State of Alaska Office of Public Advocacy. She served on the board and as president of the National Guardianship Association, was a founding member of Alaska State Association for Guardianship and Advocacy, and also the Network of Alaska Representative Payees. Dorcas likewise served on the boards of Alaska Children's Services, Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion, and Hospice of Anchorage.

Upon retiring in 2004, Dorcas and Joe moved to Bella Vista and enjoyed being close to their families in Kansas and Texas. Dorcas served in many leadership roles at the Judson American Baptist Church, was on the boards of American Baptist Women's Ministries in the Central Region and Village House of Bella Vista. Besides service to her church, she had a passion for her family, Alaska, world travel, shopping and hand-woven baskets.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Joe of the home; son, Matthew Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Hester Gonzales of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, J.R. Jackson of Menifee, Calif.; three grandchildren; her sister, Lois Waln of Wichita; brother, John Mark Lambertson of Kansas City, Mo.; her church family; and many other treasured friends.
