William served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-24D "Mohawk" #42-40786, 373rd Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Pulaski County, Virginia prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on September 12, 1942 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Guard and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J #42-40786 took off, with a crew of 10 and 4 other B-24's, from Yangkai Airfield, China on a bombing mission over Hai Phong, French Indochina (Vietnam).
The B-24's were intercepted and attacked by approximately 50 Japanese Zeros. B-24J #42-40786 was severely damaged and many of the crew were killed in this attack. Some of the crew were able to bail out. The B-24 ended up crashing.
William was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in the Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and was later re-interred here on January 24, 1949.
