Virginia A. Laity, 91, of Scales Mound died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Midwest Medical Center in Galena. She was born on July 13, 1917, in Apple River Township of Jo Daviess County, the daughter of William Wilbur and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Williams. Virginia married LaVerne Addison Schoenhard on Nov. 23, 1938, at Westminster Presbyterian Church manse in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1962. On June 1, 1968, Virginia married Clifford Earl Laity at First Presbyterian Church in Scales Mound. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1984.
She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Scales Mound and its FHC Circle, Jo Daviess County Retired Teachers, Illinois Retired Teachers, Alumni Association-University of Wisconsin, Platteville, senior citizens club and several card clubs.
She graduated from Scales Mound High School in 1935 and the University of Wisconsin, Platteville in 1937. She later earned bachelors and master's degrees in education from the same university.
She began teaching in rural schools, then Scales Mound School. The last 21-years she was a teacher in the Lena-Winslow schools
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Ann Schoenhard of Freeport; stepdaughter, Fern Moyer of Galena; stepson, James Laity of Scales Mound; two grandchildren, Adam Schoenhard of Las Vegas, Nev., and Angela Schoenhard of San Diego, Calif.; 11 stepgrandchildren, Richard Laity of Florida, Dan Laity and William Laity of Galena, Sharon McGuire, Lynn Delson and Timothy Laity, all of Milwaukee, Wis., Lori Moyer, Rodney Moyer, Tom Moyer and Wayne Moyer, all of Galena, and Bob Moyer of Dubuque, Iowa; nine stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Abby and Ben Moyer and Connor Laity; and two brothers, Alan and Gordon Williams of Scales Mound.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Rick Schoenhard; a daughter Korliss Schoenhard; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Laity; a stepson Keith Laity; a stepgrandson, Mark Laity; and a sister-in-law, Marvel Williams.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home in Scales Mound with the Rev. Janice Diefenthaler officiating. Burial will be at Scales Mound Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
A Virginia Laity Memorial Fund has been established for scholarships at Scales Mound High School.
